Easy Digital Downloads is built around digital products: files, payments, orders, receipts, and customer downloads. That is a useful fit for a creator selling their own ebooks, templates, music, or software. It does not mean every store feature—or a multi-vendor marketplace—is included in the free plugin. The important question is which parts of your intended sales process are available in the version you plan to use.

A digital store is different from a marketplace

For one seller, EDD’s getting-started guide covers creating a download, setting a price, connecting a payment gateway, configuring email, and making a test purchase. If you want outside sellers to register, submit products, and manage their own listings, EDD documents a separate Frontend Submissions extension. Commission handling may require another extension. Check the current plan and extension terms before calling the project a marketplace.

That distinction can save a costly rebuild. Write down whether you need only your own catalog, or vendor applications, product moderation, seller payouts, and disputes. The second list is a platform operation, not just a new checkout page.

What the core setup covers

• Products: Create a download with its file and price. Check how your chosen file type and size will be delivered.
• Checkout: Connect an eligible gateway and review the fields customers must complete. EDD’s gateway documentation covers available options and test mode. Availability can depend on your country and merchant account.
• Receipts and customer access: Configure purchase emails and confirm that a buyer can get the right file after payment. An order record is not enough if the receipt or link fails.
• Discounts and reports: Check the features you actually need in the current plan. A long feature list is less useful than confirming your own sale and refund path.

EDD offers a free Lite version and paid plans. The current pricing page should be checked for plan limits, extensions, introductory versus renewal prices, and any platform transaction fee. Gateway processing fees are separate. Avoid choosing a plan from an old article or screenshot.

File protection needs a host-level check

EDD can set a download limit and expiry time for generated links. Its documentation explains that an expired link does not necessarily remove a customer’s right to download again; a fresh link can be generated when they sign in. Expiring links also do not stop a buyer from copying a file after download.

Check whether someone can reach the underlying file URL without buying. EDD’s NGINX guidance warns that its default .htaccess protection applies to Apache, so an NGINX host needs appropriate server rules. Ask your host how EDD files are protected and test direct access from a signed-out browser. For large files or external storage, check the delivery method and access rules before launch.

Refunds depend on the gateway and order

EDD documents refund controls from the order screen for supported gateways, including selecting items in an order. The exact flow varies by gateway. Confirm whether your chosen payment method supports full or partial refunds from EDD, how the order status changes, and what happens to download access. Write a refund policy customers can understand.

Run a complete test before accepting orders

EDD’s test-and-launch guide recommends test mode, a test order, and checks of the confirmation page, receipt email, file link, and order record. If you use Stripe, EDD notes that its own test mode and the Stripe test connection are separate. Follow the gateway-specific instructions rather than assuming a successful connection in live mode covers testing.

1. Create one real example product with the file and price you intend to sell.
2. Configure the checkout, receipt sender, and purchase confirmation page.
3. Place a test order as a customer would, then open the receipt and download the file.
4. Check the order in WordPress and try the refund path available to your gateway.
5. Test a failed or interrupted payment and a signed-out attempt to reach the file directly.
6. Only after those checks, turn off test mode and confirm the live gateway connection.

EDD may be a sensible choice when your store mainly sells downloads and you want WordPress to manage the catalog. If you need physical shipping, complex inventory, or a multi-vendor operation, compare the full workflow and required extensions before committing. Product documentation can establish what a feature is designed to do; only testing on your own host can establish that your checkout and file delivery work as intended.
