Quick answer: In the Netherlands, crypto held privately is generally a Box 3 asset valued at 1 January, 00:00, using the rate on the exchange platform you use. Extra income from work beyond ordinary investing may fall under other-work or business-income rules. Filing and tax owed depend on your full circumstances and the tax year; check the Belastingdienst instructions for that year.

Start with the Dutch tax year and your situation

This guide concerns Dutch income tax for people who hold or trade crypto. Business income, wages paid in crypto and VAT on business transactions have different rules. The Belastingdienst’s crypto guidance separates those situations; use the rules for the year you are filing.

Private holdings: value them for Box 3

For an ordinary private holder, crypto is a Box 3 asset. The reference time is 1 January at 00:00 of the tax year. The Belastingdienst says to use the value in economic traffic based on the rate on the exchange platform you use. Keep a record of each holding, its quantity, the rate and platform used, and how you calculated the euro total. If you use several platforms, record the rate used for each holding and keep a consistent, documented calculation.

In the current return interface, crypto appears under “bank accounts and other assets” as “crypto assets.” For returns for 2024 or earlier, the authority says to select “other assets” instead. See its step-by-step crypto return page for the current wording and thresholds. Owning crypto does not by itself mean you must file or will owe tax; the calculation depends on your broader assets, debts and tax-year rules.

Trading or mining: check whether income rules apply

Buying and selling crypto as an investment is generally treated differently from earning income through additional work. The Belastingdienst says that if activity beyond ordinary investment often produces extra income, that income may need to be reported as income from other work or business profit. It also distinguishes mining proceeds from the crypto asset itself. There is no universal number of trading hours or rigs in its guidance that automatically moves every holder into Box 1.

If you are paid in crypto for employment or business services, the Belastingdienst lists separate treatment. VAT treatment depends on the underlying business transaction; payment in crypto does not make it irrelevant. If your activity crosses private investing, mining and business work, ask a Dutch tax adviser to classify the actual transactions and keep the supporting records.

Keep records for the calculation you actually use

Save exchange and wallet balances at the reference time, transaction exports, and the rate source used for conversion. The Belastingdienst also offers a route to report actual return when it is lower than the assumed return under the applicable rules. Its instructions for actual return ask for values on 1 January and 31 December and purchase and sale totals during the year. Check the official examples before using that option; this short guide cannot calculate your individual tax.

From 1 January 2026, crypto service providers have a reporting duty for customer and transaction data under DAC8, according to the Belastingdienst. The authority says this does not change how individuals file and pay. Provider reporting does not replace your own records or establish how a particular holding is taxed.

Frequently asked questions

Is crypto taxed in Box 3 in the Netherlands?

Private crypto holdings generally belong among Box 3 assets. Whether you must report them or owe tax depends on your total situation and the rules for the tax year.

Which date and rate do I use for a Dutch crypto return?

Use the value at 1 January, 00:00, for the year being filed. The Belastingdienst says to use the rate on the exchange platform you use and to retain the calculation.

Do I report every gain from selling Bitcoin as Box 1 income?

No. Ordinary private trading is generally investing. Income from additional work beyond that activity can fall under income from other work or business profit, depending on the facts.

Where do I enter crypto on a Dutch income-tax return?

The current Belastingdienst instructions place crypto under bank accounts and other assets, with a crypto-assets selection. For 2024 and earlier returns, the authority specifies other assets.

Does mining crypto change the tax treatment?

It can. The Belastingdienst distinguishes the crypto asset from mining proceeds and says income from other work or business may arise when proceeds exceed costs. Check your own facts.

Do crypto platforms report transactions to Dutch tax authorities?

From 1 January 2026, crypto service providers must report customer and transaction data under DAC8, according to the Belastingdienst. That reporting does not replace your own filing obligation.
