Earlier this week we already explained how you could make money with Google AdSense and WordPress. But there are, of course, many more ways to get better financially using WordPress as a starting platform. Today, we are going to talk about how you can set up a WordPress review website.
Why create a WordPress review website?
What is the first thing you do if you want to order something online that you have not purchased before? Most people look for online reviews of the product in question, to see what others have to say about it. Even though we live in an era where every other review that was published online – has been sponsored, we still want to believe it. Perhaps it is more like – if we see a lot of negative reviews, we would know to stir clear from that product. Companies, therefore, attach great importance to positive reviews and invest a great deal of money in maintaining their products’ good name.
I know someone who, if he is somewhat dissatisfied with a purchase, immediately places a negative review on social media. Although I myself do not go that far (or perhaps I am a little more picky with my purchases) I have to admit that he does achieve things with this tactic. Often the company quickly contacts him with a nice offer (refund, replacement of the product, a nice bonus…), if he would agree to remove his negative review…
Yes, reviews can make or break a company. That is also one of the reasons why TripAdvisor, one of the most popular online review websites, is now worth around $8.5 billion. Of course, we can’t all grow as big as TripAdvisor. But there are plenty of people who make money with their own review website, ranging from a few tens to a few thousand euros a month. And you can do that with your own WordPress review website as well.
Online reviews help others make the right decision about their purchases. At the same time, you can receive an affiliate commission – in other words, you get money because you promote a product.
How do you start with a WordPress review website?
There are two ways to start a WordPress review website. You can:
- build a new WordPress review site that is dedicated to a specific niche (for example, cosmetics)
- or add a review section to your existing blog.
Whichever option you opt-in for, it is necessary to think carefully about the niche that you choose. The perfect niche (in the ideal case scenario) has little competition and is something that you are genuinely interested in. For example, if you are a blogger posting beauty tutorials, it is not a bad idea to write reviews about new cosmetic products.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- What resources can you use to generate web traffic?
- You can easily attract advertisers (in other words, people who sell these products).
- Are affiliate programs available?
- Are there other people active in this niche, and do they earn money with it?
- What does the competition look like?
You can use tools such as SEMRush, Ahrefs and Google Keyword Planner to research the right keywords.
I have found the perfect niche, and now what?
Once you have found the perfect niche, you must ensure that your WordPress review website is actually suitable for reviews. You can install a special theme that was designed for a “review” site, or use a plugin, such as WP Product Review Lite. Now that your WordPress review website is ready, it’s time to proceed to affiliate marketing.
Affiliate marketing with WordPress
There are different ways you can earn money with your WordPress site. Maybe you have your own webshop where you sell products. You may use your site to provide services. Or maybe you make money with your WordPress blog and any advertisements on it. But there is another way to make money with your WordPress site: affiliate marketing.
What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is a form of online marketing where you refer someone to an online product from another company. When that person buys the product based on your recommendation, you will receive a commission. That commission can vary from $1 to $10,000, depending on the product you are promoting.
How do companies know where the web traffic comes from?
They know that thanks to a so-called tracking URL. This is a unique link that you receive from the affiliate company or the company that sells the product. The tracking URL keeps track of all the web traffic (and sales) that you generate via your website. In this way, your commission can also be calculated.
What should I be able to become an affiliate marketer?
In essence, you do not need any special qualifications to become an affiliate marketer, although it is an advantage to have good copywriting skills, as well as some knowledge of marketing and SEO.
How do you start affiliate marketing?
There are many companies that sell products or services online and offer an affiliate program. You simply sign up for the program, after which you will receive your unique tracking URL. When you write about their product, you can use it to refer your visitors to the company’s website. If a visitor actually buys something, you will receive a commission.
How do I find an affiliate link for a product?
Not all companies have an affiliate program. But the companies that do offer that usually provide more information on their website. Another way to find affiliate programs is by searching on Google for the “(product name) + affiliate program.” There are also companies that use a so-called affiliate marketplace, such as ShareASale. These affiliate marketplaces are free to use, and you can create a free account.
How much money can I earn with affiliate marketing?
There is no limit to the amount of money you can earn with affiliate programs. It all depends on which program you are promoting and how many conversions you have. There are plenty of people who make a living with affiliate marketing. And if you do it right, you can too!
How do affiliate marketing ties to a WordPress Review Website?
Now, it’s time to sum things up and actually tell you, how affiliate products are integrated into the review website you just created. In essence, you place a product on your website, which enables the option for people who used or tried that product (or service) to leave a review with their experience. However, that product also has a direct link for purchasing. For example, if you put for a review a certain hosting company, you make that product clickable (or place a nice fat button with “purchase now” plea), which uses your affiliate URL. This way, every time someone makes a purchase, (based on the positive reviews, of course), you get a commission. The same thing with lipsticks that customers can purchase directly on Amazon or hotel stays through an affiliate booking service, etc.
In this case, you have a direct interest in getting many positive reviews to the product you are promoting, because that way you will probably get to see more commissions rolling in. However, don’t publish fake positive reviews nor encourage people to leave favorable feedback. The more objective the review is, the more believable it will look, and the more likely someone is to convert. If the review highlights the positive AND the negative aspects of the product or service in question, it is a lot more likely to come across as credible.
Remember, that in today’s consumerism, people are constantly shopping online, and are looking for product reviews all the time, so being in the right place in the right time with your review, can bring you a great deal of money. This is especially true for newly released products, that have very little reviews (yet) – this is your opportunity to stand out and grab the traffic from Google or Bing, from people who are searching for keyword terms “Product X review.” Anyway, good luck!
